Hong Kong’s sister SAR, Macau, is a tourist haven with UNESCO heritage sites, fancy casinos, brilliant cafes, and more. Just an hour’s ferry ride away, Macau makes a great day trip for Hong Kongers looking for a quiet vacation. To attract tourists, the Macau tourism authority announced that it will offer Hong Kong and international visitors a “buy one, get one free” deal on ferry and bus tickets. It means that visitors from Hong Kong can get a free return tickets.
Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Director Maria Helena Senna Fernandes made the comments earlier this week. She said: “Hong Kong is a major transit point for foreign tourists, especially those heading to Macao. Therefore, the government hopes to take advantage of transportation services and combine travel between the two cities.”
Visitors to Hong Kong can get free return tickets.
Shortly after Macau announced the relaxation in January 2023, the local tourism bureau launched the “Reward for visiting Macao” campaign. To attract more international tourists, the Macao government is relaunching the previous offer of free ferry tickets for Hong Kong residents staying overnight in the city.
The new offer is a “buy one get one free” offer available to Hong Kong and international travelers from mid-April to the end of June. Visitors will get free return tickets when they buy a bus or ferry ticket to Macau.
Hong Kong was the second largest source of visitors to Macau before the pandemic. Yet the gaming center has endured some of the strictest COVID restrictions in the world for nearly three years. After a long pause, the authorities have finally resumed the 24-hour operation of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
Macao hopes to receive more tourists
Macao has welcomed more than 2,000 mainland Chinese tour groups since Feb. 6. A total of 60,000 people came to the city. In February, the Macao government began offering a subsidy scheme for mainland tourist groups through local travel agencies.
So far, the government’s plan has covered about half of all group tour arrivals in the city. International visitors can expect similar incentives next year. Senna Fernandes has already hinted that there are plans to launch travel subsidies for foreign and Taiwanese tour groups in April.
