- The Michelin Guide has pre-announced its 2023 Bib Gourmand restaurants in Hong Kong and Macau, highlighting eateries that offer ‘high-quality, good-value’ food.
- The list of under-US$50 Hong Kong restaurants and food stalls has been increased to 65, with the addition of six more offering Thai khao soi, fish snacks, and sweet soups.
Hong Kong is known for its vast selection of affordable dining options, ranging from noodle shops to family-owned restaurants serving handmade dumplings.
While there are hundreds, if not thousands, of these great-value eateries scattered throughout the city, only a select few are highlighted each year in the Michelin Guide’s Bib Gourmand category.
This category represents the restaurants that provide the best value-for-money gourmet experiences, with a three-course meal (excluding drinks) priced at a maximum of HK$400 or roughly US$50.
However, the definition is quite broad, and even a dessert shop like Kai Kai in Jordan that serves sweet soups and light snacks is included on the list. The 2023 list includes some casual food stalls where a filling meal can be enjoyed for less than HK$400.
Located in the Prince Edward neighbourhood, Twins Liangpi Limited is a renowned takeaway-only noodle bar, standing out for its lip-smacking liangpi that is tossed in a super-flavourful chilli-and-vinegar sauce and blanketed with cucumber, coriander, crunchy soybeans, and roasted peanuts.
Adding to the list of new venues is Fisholic in North Point, offering a selection of fish-centered dishes from milky fish broth noodles to fish skin nachos. Sai Kwan Lo Jo in Jordan also finds a place in the list as a takeaway specializing in Iberico pork sticky rice dumplings.
For the 2023 edition, Macau has not added any new venues to its existing list of seven, such as the Din Tai Fung’s City of Dreams branch.
According to Gwendal Poullenec, the international director of the Michelin guides, Hong Kong is a destination that has an abundance of talent, as well as creativity within the industry.
On January 12, 2022, the Bib Gourmand list from the previous year was revealed, followed by an online ceremony on January 19 to showcase the Michelin-star ratings for Hong Kong and Macau. This time, the unveiling of the Michelin stars shall return as a physical gathering, taking place in Macau on April 26.
